Description

This magnitude 11 spiral galaxy is located 60 million light years away in the constellation of Cetus at a declination of -8 degrees.  It spans 5 arc-minutes in our apparent view, which corresponds to a diameter of almost 100,000 light years.  The Hubble mosaic image is shown in the mouseover.

This galaxy is a somewhat disturbed grand spiral.  Numerous blue star clouds and pink HII regions are seen throughout the arms of the disk.  These arms start at some distance from the yellow core.

Despite having a bit of a face-on look, this galaxy is closer to edge-on than face-on.  I calculate our viewing angle to be about 35 degrees from edge-on.

The smaller galaxies seen in the lower half of the image are all 0.5 billion light years away and all appear to have interesting structures.  I like the small blue spiral galaxy (LEDA 1002752) with its heavy arm structure, and the yellow spiral galaxy (LEDA 10137) with its strong dust lane.

The smallest spiral galaxies, seen in the lower right corner of the image, are about 2 billion light years away.
